Biography

Born in 1893, he enlisted as a Private in The Cameronian Regiment in 1914, before being commissioned. He joined the 9th Battalion DLI as a Second Lieutenant in July 1916 and won the Military Cross in September during an attack on Starfish Trench, Battle of the Somme, and the Bar in April 1917 during an attack on the German lines near the Cojeul River.

During the war, he became a Regular DLI officer. From 1925 to 1929 he was Adjutant of the 7th Battalion DLI in Sunderland. He retired in 1933 but served again on special duties during the Second World War.

Charles Bowdery died in 1972.
