Biography

Archibald Lawrance served as a Regular soldier with the 2nd Battalion DLI in the Egyptian Campaign in 1885 and fought at the Battle of Ginnis. When the Boer War began, he was serving on the Permanent Staff of the 2nd Volunteer Battalion DLI as as a Colour Sergeant. He went with the 2nd Volunteer Service Company to South Africa in February 1901, returning home to Newcastle in June 1902.

His son, Archibald George Lawrance (Medal Case 2), was killed in action at Hooge near Ypres on 9 August 1915 whilst serving as a Sergeant with his father's old battalion.
