Biography

Born in Cassop, County Durham, John Hardy was living at Trimdon Grange when he enlisted in 1915 in the 20th (Wearsiders) Battalion DLI. Private Hardy was awarded the Military Medal on 1st October 1916 for his bravery at Gueudecourt during the Battle of the Somme. During this fighting, he was killed. John Hardy has no known grave but he is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing, which lists the names of over 70,000 soldiers who died on the Somme and who have no known grave.
