Biography

Brother of George Robert Bell. From Sheriff Hill, Gateshead. Joined 9 DLI - a territorial battalion - before the First World War. Both first fought at Ypres in April 1915. Joseph was killed in action during the failed attack on the Buttede Warlencourt, Battle of the Somme, on 6 November 1916. He was warded a posthumous Military Medal for his bravery during the battle. Thomas Alfred, a third brother, was also killed in action with the Royal Fusiliers. George alone survived the Great War.
