Miniature Portraits of James O'Callaghan and his wife, about 1800. James O'Callaghan fought as a Regular British officer in the American War of Independence. In 1798 he joined the Durham Militia as a Major and served as Lieutenant Colonel from 1803 to 1835. The uniform shown in this miniature painting is a scarlet coatee (jacket) with yellow facings (collar and cuffs) and silver lace. The Durham Militia wore buff (yellow) facings until 1803, when they were changed to white. Acc No: 985/1&2
