Shako, South Durham Militia

Officer's Shako, 1st South Durham Militia, 1853-1855. This 'Albert' pattern shako is made of black beaver with a patent leather top and peaks. The gilt plate or badge has a central red enamel cross with 'Durham' below. This shako belonged to William Ord of Sunderland, who was commissioned as a Lieutenant in 1853. In 1853, the Durham Militia was split into three new Regiments - 1st South Durham Militia, 2nd North Durham Militia & 3rd Durham Militia Artillery.
