Biography

He served with the 13th (Service) Battalion DLI during the Great War and rose to the rank of Company Sergeant Major. He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal in June 1917, during the Battle of Messines, when "he took charge of half his company when it was in a very exposed position and subjected to heavy bombardment, by his example so encouraging the men that they were able to hold on to a series of shell holes and turn them into a good defensive line". Sergeant Thomson was also awarded the Military Medal in October 1918.
