Biography

Born in Durham City in 1877, he enlisted as a Regular soldier and fought, as a Sergeant, in the Boer War with the 1st Battalion DLI. He later joined the Permanent Staff of the 5th Battalion DLI, a Territorial battalion, at Stockton-on-Tees and became Regimental Sergeant Major.

He served on the Western Front with 5 DLI from April 1915 to early 1917 and was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal in 1916 "for conspicuously good and valuable work throughout the campaign.... He has repeatedly shown great coolness and ability during active operations."

In civilian life, he worked for Head Wrightson at Thornaby.

Arthur Thew died in 1943, aged 66 years.
