Biography

Born in Kilbride, Ireland, he was a labourer before he enlisted as a Private in the 68 Light Infantry in February 1852, aged 18 years. He fought in the Crimean War and was wounded in the arm at Sebastopol in July 1855. In 1860, he was appointed Hospital Sergeant, a position he held until 1873, when he transferred to the 106 Light Infantry as that Regiment's Hospital Sergeant. Michael Higgins took his discharge in 1874 and retired to Cirencester. He had had an exemplary career never being tried by court martial nor named in the Defaulter's Book in 22 years.
