Biography

Born in 1867, he enlisted as a Private in the 5 Durham Rifle Volunteers in 1884 and rapidly rose through the ranks. In 1892, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant and served in the Volunteers and later the Territorials, retiring with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in 1924. In 1915 he commanded 9 DLI in Belgium at the Second Battle of Ypres and was made a Companion of the Order of St. Michael & St. George in 1916. In 1918 he was given command of 2/9 DLI in Salonika, returning in 1919 to re-command 9 DLI. From 1931 to 1946, he was Honorary Colonel of 9 DLI. In civilian life, Andrew Henderson was a shipbroker. He died at Gateshead in 1951, aged 84 years.
