Biography

Born in 1910, he joined the Regular Army and served with the 2nd Battalion DLI in India and the Sudan in the 1930's. In June 1939, he joined the Territorial Army and became a clerk with the 8th Battalion DLI at Gilesgate in Durham City.

He served with 8 DLI during WW2 and saw action in North Africa. By 1945, he had risen to the rank of Orderly Room Quarter Master Sergeant. When 8 DLI was reformed in 1947, he resumed his job as ORQMS, which he held until he was forced to retire for health reasons in 1963. He was awarded the MBE in 1958.

William Harper died in 1970.
