Biography

Born in 1892, he was commissioned as a Temporary Second Lieutenant with the 13th (Service) Battalion DLI in March 1915. He was awarded the Military Cross for his actions during the capture of Le Sars, Battle of the Somme, on 7 October 1916, when he "led his platoon well and gallantly and, though wounded, remained with his men until consolidation was complete". He was forced to relinquish his commission because of ill health casued by his wounds in March 1918 and returned home to Gosforth. Ernest Atkinson died in 1949.
