Biography

Born in Great Usworth,County Durham, in 1890, his father was a policeman and, later, Assistant Chief Constable of County Durham. John went to Durham Johnston School and then Leeds Training College. In March 1915, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the 19th Battalion DLI and he fought on the Western Front. At the end of the war, he retired with the rank of Captain and returned to teaching. He later became a head teacher. John Waller died in 1951.
