Biography

Thomas Walshaw was born in 1887 and brought up by the Greenwell family in Ryhop and, when he left school, began work in the local colliery. He later joined the 7th (Territorial) Battalion DLI in Sunderland and served with this battalion on the Western Front during the Great War. After the war, he returned to Ryhope Colliery but left in 1935 and moved to North East Marine in Sunderland. Thomas Walshaw died in 1966 aged 79 years.
