Biography

Born in 1887, Thomas Turnbull was working as a labourer when he enlisted as a Regular soldier at Newcastle upon Tyne on 27 December 1904. He was posted to the 1st Battalion DLI and served with 1 DLI in India during the Great War. When he finally retired from the Army after 21 years service in December 1925, Lance Corporal Turnbull was the battalion's postman. He then worked as a Commissionaire for 22 years. He died in Newcastle upon Tyne in 1956 following an accident. His son, Thomas William Turnbull, also served as a Regular soldier in the DLI. He presented his father's medals to the Regimental Museum, when it was in Brancepeth Castle.
