Michael Derwas Goring-Jones

Born in 1866, he was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the DLI in 1886. He saw most of his service in India and was Adjutant of the Nagpore Volunteer Rifles from 1901-06. When the Great War began, he was with the 1st Battalion in India on the North West Frontier, but in early 1915 he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and sent to Belgium to command the 2nd Battalion.

He led 2 DLI at the Battle of Hooge in August 1915. In 1916 he was promoted to Brigadier General and took command of the 146th Brigade. He was made a Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George in 1916 and was awarded the Distinguished Service Order in 1918.

Michael Goring-Jones died in 1919 at Ryde, Isle of Wight, aged 53.
