Biography

From Corbridge, this young soldier was killed in action on 29 May 1918, aged just 18, whilst serving with the 15th (Service) Battalion DLI. He died during the German attack on the River Aisne, when, in three days of fighting, 15 DLI lost almost 500 men killed, wounded or taken prisoner. William Burn has no known grave, but his name is recorded on the Soissons Memorial in France, which bears the names of almost 4,000 British soldiers who died during the Battles of the Aisne and the Marne in 1918.
